When a super soldier finds his lover. A review for Chaos Station by Jenn Burke & Kelly Jensen

Sci-Fi is not an easy genre to write and I’m not one for overly complex stories set in space. Chaos Station, the first book in a new series, is not one such book. There are new worlds, new civilizations and new rules, fit in a familiar jacket of long lost lovers finding each other and off on an adventure they go.

Chaos Station is the story of former soldiers Felix Ingesson and Zander Anatolius who find each other again after years apart, where one though the other was dead and one carries a terrible secret. They find themselves in a complex situation neither of them expected to be in. After a slow start, they hit the road running and action and adventure follow closely after in a nice pacing.

There is no instant love when the two lovers reunite, in fact, fists almost start flying and there is lots of arguing, hurt and secrets. There is a slow burn where Felix and Zander learn to trust each other again and work towards some peace and quit.

The theme of the story is not exactly new: that of lost lovers finding each other again. It comes without the big misunderstanding many of these stories have, for which I was very happy. While not new, it’s brought in a nice package with a three dimensional plot, featuring lots of other solid characters and a mystery. What the story lacked was a bit of wit or funniness to give it that edge. While there was a bit of banter between the characters on the ship, it felt a bit forced.

The writing was well done and went a long way towards creating a vivid science fiction world that the readers can find themselves in and understand. Without only seeing bits and pieces that are thrown in. Neither is the world building overwhelming with pages upon pages of descriptions.

As the book is a series, we’re left with an ending that needs the continuation of the series. There are a lot of unanswered questions, but I have no doubt the authors will deliver.

Why you should read it: Chaos Station is a serious sci-fi romance that has drama, action, adventure and some flawed characters that can kick some major but and actually features the science bit of the fiction side!

The war with the alien stin is over, but Felix Ingesson has given up on seeing his lover, Zander Anatolius, ever again. Zander's military file is sealed tighter than an airlock. A former prisoner of war, Felix is attempting a much quieter life keeping his ship, the Chaos, aloft. He almost succeeds, until Zander walks on board and insists that Felix isn't real.

A retired, broken super soldier, Zander is reeling from the aftereffects of his experimental training and wants nothing more than to disappear and wait for insanity to claim him. Then he sees footage of a friend and ally—a super soldier like him—murdering an entire security squad with her bare hands and a cold, dead look in her eyes. He never expected to find Felix, the man he'd thought dead for years, on the ship he hired to track her down.

Working with Felix to rescue his teammate is a dream come true…and a nightmare. Zander has no exit strategy that will leave Felix unscathed—or his own heart unbroken
