Skylin: Old Remnants is the first issue of a fantasy indie comic by authors Frederick Packard and Joshua Valliere and illustrator Adam Cozart. I was offered the comic by their imprint Charon Comics and was intrigued by the first glance at the cover, but a pretty cover does not a good comic make. Lucky for me, the first issue of Skylin doesn’t disappoint
Skylin introduces us the world of Berengia and starts with a little history of the realm and the Demon King, but the focus of the story is Skylin, our young heroine of the story and a servant. Right from the start we know there will be more to her story, but I liked that it was a slow introduction.
The style and the artwork of the world of Skylin is simple, but beautiful. The use of colors, make the story come to live. It’s not overly detailed, but that gives it a whimsical feel and I have to say I loved it. This from someone who is very criticals of the comics she reads.
I found that the authors and the illustrator did a good job between the story and the artwork. Right from the start you are drawn into it and the art makes the story come to life. There is a balance between the art/panels and the story itself.
This first issue is a good start of the series that gives a little background, but goes straight into the story. My complaint? It was way too short! I need more!
