Wake Up Call is the first book in the Porthkennack series. The series will be will be written by different authors set in different era’s. With Wake Up Call the series – set in the fictional town of Porthkennack – is off to a good start.

What is the story about?
The story is about South London mechanic Devan Thompson and former barrister Kyle Anthony. Both have different reasons for being in the little seaside town of Porthkennack. Dev is hoping to meet is biological mother after being raised in foster care. He’s young and wants answers. Kyle is there because he has narcolepsy, an illness that has affected his working life and his relationship and so he fled to Porthkennack to find a new balance. It’s there that the two meet. Dev is looking for someone to hangout as his friend bailed on him and Kyle is instantly attracted to the lightness Dev brings with him. What are your thoughts on Wake Up Call?
J.L. Merrow has the gift of writing normal characters with normal(ish) lives into an extraordinary story and making it magical. She’s very good with details and background stories. She makes the town of Porthkennack come to life, same as with the characters of Dev and Kyle and the assorted cast of secondary characters. I liked Dev and Kyle’s story. Dev is a fun character. Despite what he seems to think, he’s got a level head and has fun wherever he goes. Kyle feels a little down on life. He’s had a hard time adjusting to his new situation. He’s grumpy and tries very hard to keep everyone at arm’s length. Despite their different background, Dev and Kyle fir well together and their story in Wake Up Call is very charming.

How is the writing?
The writing is very British with some dialect which gave the story and authentic feel. She makes the characters come to life, the same with the town and the background of Porthkennack. She writes a romance between characters that feels real and authentic. It’s a slow burn, but charming too.
