Romantic reads: what is yours?

Recently I got into a conversation with a friend, about books of course. During the conversation, she asked me what the most romantic book I ever read was.

I had no idea.

Do not get me wrong, I read predominantly m/m books and almost all have a hint of romance and couples and sweetness, but none came immediately to mind. Not even if I included the mainstream and young adult books I read.

Of course, my friend had a list of books: Jane Austen’s Emma, Colleen Hoover’s Slammed and Sarah Dessen’s Once and for All.

The question continued to plague me and I finally decided it has also a lot to do with my definition of romance. A candlelit dinner person I am not. Nor am I a person for romantic walks and holding hands.

I can name ten couples from books I really love, but none are from books that are mainly romance. It’s always combined with fantasy, urban fantasy or mystery.

If I take the above into account and look for romance in all the books I read then I can name a few books that are romantic to me.

Adrien English series by Josh Lanyon
Granted, in the first book there was no romance at all. Actually, if you think about it, the books are not romantic at all even if Jake and Adrien love each other. For more than half the series, Adrien is Jake’s dirty little secret. At the same time, the way they care for the other, how they love each other and what they are willing to sacrifice is beautiful. Their story is both heart breaking, beautiful and gut wrenching.

THIRDS series by Charlie Cochet
There are a few couples in this series, but I’m talking about Dex and Sloane. They are just heart-melting sweet together. Also funny, crazy, hot and wicked. Dex is a menace, but Sloane and Dex are made for each other and the situations they get in together – apart from the main story of the books – is just adorable. Like a certain part of a bachelor party in Gummy Bears and Grenades.

Spencer Cohen series by N.R. Walker
Spencer and Andrew. Do I really need to say more? How their friendship and romance came about is just way too sweet to put into words. The first book is one of my favourite re-reads around Valentine’s Day or when I need to read something to make me go “aaaaawwww”

Dogwood Days by Poppy Dennison
What can I say, what’s not to love about Jefferson Lee and Sheriff Zane Yarbrough. Jefferson Lee is almost as crazy as Dex, but less of a menace. Jefferson is a cutie and he and Zane make an adorable couple. I love their story. Especially in audiobook version when Matt Armstrong tells the story.

I could go on for a while, because there are some favourite runner’s up, but then this would become a really long list and that is just focussing on the m/m aspect of the list.

As you can see from the list, it’s book as a whole I adore, not just the romance aspects.

What is your favourite romance book or couple?
