What are your thoughts on Wake Up Call?
J.L. Merrow has the gift of writing normal characters with normal(ish) lives into an extraordinary story and making it magical. She’s very good with details and background stories. She makes the town of Porthkennack come to life, same as with the characters of Dev and Kyle and the assorted cast of secondary characters. I liked Dev and Kyle’s story. Dev is a fun character. Despite what he seems to think, he’s got a level head and has fun wherever he goes. Kyle feels a little down on life. He’s had a hard time adjusting to his new situation. He’s grumpy and tries very hard to keep everyone at arm’s length. Despite their different background, Dev and Kyle fir well together and their story in Wake Up Call is very charming.
How is the writing?
The writing is very British with some dialect which gave the story and authentic feel. She makes the characters come to life, the same with the town and the background of Porthkennack. She writes a romance between characters that feels real and authentic. It’s a slow burn, but charming too.
